Irish Lotto Draw
The Irish have been involved in the idea of National betting for a long time, even before the Irish Lotto Draw was launched, the country run the Irish Sweepstakes. In 1986 it was decided that the Sweepstakes would be replaced by a National Lottery draw, to raise money for sport, recreation, health and welfare, heritage and the arts and so the Irish Lotto Draw was born.
The Irish Lottery is run by the An Post National Lottery Company and has been since its inception. Although the license to run the lotto draw has to be bid for every ten years, as yet it has stayed in the hands of the original company. The Irish Lottery play many lotto draws from one umbrella company with lottery tickets and scratchcards available from lottery booths throughout the country. The main draw is the Lotto draw for the Irish Lottery, a twice weekly drawn held every Wednesday and Saturday evening.
Originally six balls were drawn from a possible 34, but this was soon increased to the 6:45 matrix we are familiar with today. During the Lotto draw, seven balls are drawn from the lottery machine, six main balls and a bonus number. To win the Irish Lottery jackpot you must match all six numbers on your lottery ticket with the first six drawn in the main lotto draw. Since the new balls were introduced, odds of winning the Irish Lottery are around one in 8 million, much lower than many lottery draws around the world.
The Irish Lottery has always been of interest to lottery players around the world, it was one of the first lotto draws that you could place bets on. Of course now you can buy lottery tickets for the lotto draw wherever you are in the world, instead of betting on the numbers. But while the lotto draw is popular with lottery players around the world, it has fallen out of favour with Irish lottery players until there are rollovers, with many preferring to play the big Euromillions Lottery jackpots available weekly to Irish players.
That said, the Irish Lottery still remains one of the most famous lotto draws in the world and is held in the hearts of many, not least those who have scooped big prizes on the lotto draw.
